The 12 signals your body sends before full burnout

Burnout doesn't arrive — it's announced. Here are the twelve early signals most women miss, in the order they usually appear.

Burnout is rarely a cliff. It's a slope, and the slope has signs. The problem is that the signs are subtle, physical, and easy to file under 'I'm just tired' — until you're not just tired anymore.

§Why the early signals get missed

Your nervous system doesn't scream 'burnout' until it's already deep in it. Before that, it whispers — through your sleep, your digestion, your patience, your shoulders. The whispers are the protocol. The scream is the collapse.

§The twelve, in order

These don't always appear in this exact sequence, but this is the order most women describe when they look back. Notice which ones you'd check today.

  1. 01Waking at 3am with a brain that won't switch off
  2. 02Coffee stops working — you need more for the same lift
  3. 03Small decisions feel disproportionately heavy
  4. 04Weekends don't recover you — Monday feels like Friday never happened
  5. 05Your patience thins with people you love
  6. 06Body aches that move: jaw, shoulders, gut, lower back
  7. 07Skin, gut, or menstrual cycle start behaving differently
  8. 08You stop doing the things that used to recharge you
  9. 09Your inner monologue turns meaner
  10. 10Tasks that used to take an hour now take three
  11. 11You feel both wired and exhausted simultaneously
  12. 12You can't picture six months from now — the future has gone fuzzy
Three or more of these at once, for more than two weeks, is not 'just busy season.' That's the slope.

§What 'the slope' actually is

Your nervous system runs two modes: mobilisation (sympathetic) and recovery (parasympathetic). Healthy burnout resistance isn't the absence of stress — it's the ability to switch back to recovery between stressors. The twelve signals are what happens when that switch gets stuck in the 'on' position.

Frequently asked

How many of the twelve is 'too many'?+

Three or more, sustained for more than two weeks, is a meaningful cluster. One or two that come and go with normal life stress is not burnout — it's being human.

Can I fix this with a holiday?+

A holiday removes the stressor temporarily, but it doesn't rebuild the nervous-system switch. Most women return from holiday and hit the same slope within a week. The fix is a daily recovery practice, not a single reset.
